Teaching Philosophy

My classroom is a safe place for learning and is culturally competent. Students will be respectful and respected by all who step onto campus. Students will learn to not give up when they make a mistake, challenge themselves, listen to others, express opinions politely, and enjoy coming to school. I strive to create an environment that is open to all cultures, beliefs, values and backgrounds; one where each student feels comfortable expressing themselves without worry. Last, but not least, I yearn for each student to walk away each day learning something new.

Homework Policy

Students will be receiving homework Monday-Thursday unless specified otherwise. As these students begin the upper grades and concepts become harder, they will need to practice. However, I have always felt that homework should be to practice skills learned in the classroom and not to stress them (and parents) out. If your child is unable to complete homework because they simply are stuck and unsure of something, please play the "Accuracy Game" with them. If they can try at least 3 different problems and get them right without too much trouble, continue on. If they cannot complete three different problems without frustration, initial the top of their homework with "AC" and I will be sure to touch base with them the next morning, to see where they are having the most difficulty. By doing this I can better help them with problem areas, give them extra help, and they will still receive credit for demonstrating best efforts. Any questions and please reach out via email.

Extra credit

I offer many opportunities for Extra Credit across all subject areas. Extra credit however is not designed for last minute (day before report cards) grade raises. I     will always send out an email and/or add the EC to the main assignment notes. If a student finds that they are struggling in a particular area or want to raise their grade and need additional credit, I  am willing to put something together; however, it is the students responsibility to come ask for an opportunity with enough time for me to put something together and have them compete it. Asking me for an extra credit assignment one week before grades are due will not be acceptable.

Test Corrections

Every student has the opportunity to do test correction throughout the year (with the exception of spelling tests). For every problem a student corrects, they will receive 1/2 points back. For example if a student received a 40/50 and corrects all ten problems, I will change their grade to a 45/50. There is a specific form for the students to fill out; they will fill it out and staple it to the back of their test and return to me. Students have until the next test in that subject area to do test corrections (unless near the end of a grading period). Any student that receives less than a 70% on an assignment is required to do test corrections AND get the form signed by a parent. This is to know that the parent has seen the test and to give their student extra practice (and it also raises their grade). Students who need extra help to do these corrections can make a time to meet with me at recess and I will go over the test with them one-on-one or in a small group.
